Many of our new Foster Carers enter our program saying “our lives won’t change, we’re already centred around the kids”. Little do they know, Foster Care doesn’t only change the lives of kids in care, it changes us all.
Here is some of the top feedback we’ve had from our Foster Carers about how their lives have changed:
- You become more safety conscious.
- You not only share your time, home and lives with a new child, but also Foster Care staff and other professionals.
- You learn to manage the heartache of a child leaving your home.
- Your children will experience care for another person and develop empathy for others; they will develop resilience to change.
- You appreciate and encourage the child having contact with their birth family.
- You learn to manage the range of emotions and behaviours that children in care can demonstrate.
- You will find by making more time for the child in care, less time is available for other activities and people.
- Your family activities may need to change structure or style to accommodate the needs of a child in care.
- Your own children will need to share their Mum and Dad, their space, their belongings with another child. This can have its up and downs.
- You will know that you have made a difference and changed lives in numerous ways.
